The impermeability to gases and liquids makes the lamp last so long, because firstly the solubility increases with temperature, so temperature swings affect the strain rate on the glass (imploding and exploding), which has a yield strength. We replace the glass with carbonic glass (glassy carbon), due to it’s impermabilty to retain it’s vacuum.
Although regular lamps could also catch on, because we would never suddenly have that unexpected moment where we would have to change the lightbulb, and less importantly it saves some money. Streetlights and such certainly catch on for sure.
